WINNER FIPRESCI PRIZE Cannes
Palestinian single mom Muna and her teenage son Fadi immigrate to rural Illinois with dreams of a better future. But starting a new life proves harder than imagined, and she and her son are forced to face hardship in the bittersweet search for a place to call home. Told with heartfelt humor by Palestinian American writer-director Cherien Dabis in her feature film debut, Amreeka is a universal journey into the lives of a family of immigrants and first-generation teenagers caught between their heritage and the new world in which they now live.
Amreeka made its world premiere in dramatic competition at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and had its international premiere in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes where it won the prestigious FIPRESCI international film critics award. It won a dozen more international awards and was nominated for a Best Picture Gotham Award, 3 Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture, and named one of the Top Ten Independent Films of the Year by the National Board of Review.
